When I introduced Charlotte Smith to my British Romanticism students this semester, I began with the Elegiac Sonnets because they contain, in brief, many of the elements traditionally associated with the British Romantic period—experiments in poetic form, the interplay of memory and Nature, the pastoral and pagan, the noble savage, the figure.
